Exemption from Bicycle Helmet Laws

The Queensland Government has recently announced amendments to the law requiring cyclists to wear bicycle helmets. This decision was announced on 23 April 2013.

In short, a cyclist will be exempt from wearing a helmet if:-

  1. The person is a member of a religious group;
  2. The person is wearing a type of headdress customarily worn by members of that group; and
  3. The wearing of the headdress makes it impractical for the person to wear a bicycle helmet.

This exemption applies to the users of bicycles, bicycle trailers, motorised scooters and personal mobility devices.
